About
Established in 1948, this grower is one of the largest growers and distributors of ornamental flowers and potted plants in North America. Operations include greenhouses, distribution and logistics, and retail, located in a rural area with limited cell coverage. The business generates 22.4 million in revenue annually, employs more than 200 people, and operates in the agriculture industry.
Project Overview
The nearest cell tower is a long distance from the site, leaving staff and visitors with dropped calls. A site survey found a weak indoor signal, particularly where thick walls and metal equipment obstruct reception. The outdoor signal was slightly better but calls were still dropped.
Challenges
- Distant cell tower and rural location
- Dropped calls for staff and visitors
- Weak indoor signal through thick walls and metal equipment
- Outdoor signal still insufficient for reliable calls
Solution
GT Global Services installed indoor cellular signal boosters, balanced against the available outdoor signal. Outdoor amplification was not feasible at this site because of oscillation, so the design concentrated on strengthening coverage inside the buildings.
Benefits / At a Glance
- No more dropped calls
- Improved staff productivity
- Better customer satisfaction
- Continuous point-of-sale operation
Conclusion
Reliable wireless coverage is achievable even in rural agricultural settings. With coverage in place, the site also opens up the possibility of wireless irrigation sensors to monitor plant health.
